One of the best players in modern Man Utd history would only train three times a week and get away with it

Manchester United have had some superstars over the last few decades

Ben Foster has revealed that one of his former Manchester United teammates used to train three times a week and get away with it.

During his three-season long stay at Old Trafford, Foster made a total of 23 appearances for United and managed to get his hands on two League Cups in the 08/09 and 09/10 seasons.

Whilst speaking on talkSPORT, Foster revealed that legendary goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar would only train three times a week. You can watch the footage below.

He said: “Not a goalie in the world could do for Manchester United what Edwin van der Sar did.”

When asked if he was underrated, Foster said: “Massively, Massively. He used to come out to training, he was getting towards the end of his career at 35, 36 when he signed for Man United.

“He would come out to training only probably three days a week.

“And I remember on Friday sometimes, he would come out, he would literally catch about three or four volleys, even then might not catch them, pat them down, squeeze the ball a bit and look at the goalie coach and say that’s me done and the coach would go cool. And he would just walk in.

“Because it was all about Saturdays, it was all in his head and he just knew what he was doing. He was incredible.”

Van der Sar joined United from Fulham back in 2005 for a fee in the region of £2 million.

In the six seasons he spent with the Red Devils, he made a total of 260 appearances whilst getting his hands on four Premier League titles, three FA Community Shields, two League Cups, one Champions League and one FIFA Club World Cup.

After the 3-1 defeat by Barcelona in the 2011 Champions League final, Van der Sar announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40.

Since retiring, Van der Sar was appointed Dutch side Ajax’s marketing director in 2012, before being promoted to the role of CEO in 2016.
