Manchester United Told Harry Maguire Will Be 'Looking Forward' To The End Of This Season

Manchester United Told Harry Maguire Will Be 'Looking Forward' To The End Of This Season

"I do feel sorry for Harry Maguire."

Manchester United have been told Harry Maguire will be 'looking forward' to getting away from football this summer after a hard season.

United captain Maguire has been a scapegoat for their poor form this campaign and the Red Devils currently sit sixth in the Premier League.

The 29-year-old was ironically cheered by fans during February's 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid and Greater Manchester Police confirmed he received a bomb threat at his home last month.

Former Premier League forward Gabriel Agbonlahor believes Maguire will be looking forward to the end of this season, in the hopes of returning and impressing new manager Erik ten Hag.

"I do feel sorry for Harry Maguire," he told Football Insider. "I’ve been there as a player where you’re going through a rough spell and everyone’s on your back. You don’t know where to turn. For him, I bet he can’t wait for the season to finish. Get on a nice break with his family, forget about football.

"Come back in pre-season, put in the hard yards and start off a new season under a new manager. He’ll be looking forward to getting away in the summer, getting away from football. You can go through that. Everyone’s got mental health and you can’t look at footballers as robots."

Maguire joined United from Leicester City in 2019 for £80 million, a world record fee for a defender.

He was then made captain in January 2020 after Ashley Young departed for Inter Milan.

The England international helped United to third and second place finishes in his first few years but is going through a difficult period.

His ability on the ball is perhaps one of his biggest strengths and many believe he'll be a regular starter under ten Hag.

Maguire has missed United's last two games, a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal and 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

Agbonlahor believes it proves their defensive issues aren't down to just one man.

The ex-Aston Villa man continued: "People like to jump on the bandwagon with Maguire. I feel sorry for him because there’s been so many poor performers for Man United. But he gets singled out all the time.

"He didn’t play against Arsenal and look how poor they were defensively. Raphael Varane wasn’t any better and neither was Victor Lindelof."

Maguire may not play again this season as he's currently recovering from a knee issue.

United return to action against Brentford on Monday evening and their chances of making the top four are incredibly low.
