Man United make first move for dynamic former Man City player - he could join in January

Man United have sent scouts to watch a former Man City defender.

Man United are interested in adding Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong to their squad in the transfer window, according to reports.

The Dutch right-back has starred in the Bundesliga over the previous two seasons, netting six goals in 46 league appearances during his time at Leverkusen.

Incredibly, five of those goals have come in 11 league appearances this term. The 21-year-old primarily operates at wing-back, and netted twice in this month's 4-0 win over Schalke.

He also has two assists in three Champions League games, and has been a crucial part of the Leverkusen side.

Although the German club sit bottom of their European group, they are three points behind second-placed Porto with two games remaining, meaning they still have an opportunity to progress to the knockout stages.

And Frimpong's performances have alerted some top European clubs - including Man United.

Jeremie Frimpong to Man United?

Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenburg has reported that the Red Devils sent scouts to Germany over the weekend to watch Leverkusen's 2-2 draw with Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.

Frimpong netted a late equaliser for his side in the match, which will no doubt have elevated his stock further.

Plettenburg has also claimed that United want to sign a "high-quality right-back" this winter, meaning the Red Devils could do a deal in January - with Frimpong seemingly at the top of their list.

If the Dutch defender, who is also eligible to play for Ghana and England, does move to Manchester, it would represent a return to the United Kingdom for the player.

He came through the youth system at Manchester City, before leaving in 2019 in search of first-team football.

Frimpong moved to Celtic, and spent one-a-half seasons with the club, helping them to a Scottish domestic treble in his first campaign.

And according to the Scottish Daily Express, it is believed that there was a sell-on clause included in the wing-back's move from Celtic to Leverkusen, meaning the Scottish giants could be in line for a large windfall in the event of any transfer involving their former player.
