Man Utd star Luke Shaw slammed by former England international after Italy sending off

Man Utd star Luke Shaw has been criticised by an ex-England international.

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has been slammed by former England international Carlton Palmer after he was sent off against Italy - who also compared him with Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Shaw was given the nod at left-back ahead of Chelsea's Ben Chilwell for the Euro 2024 qualifier, which England won 2-1.

But they were forced to hold on to their advantage in the final 10 minutes after Shaw was shown two yellow cards in a matter of minutes.

Referee Srdjan Jovanovic booked the United defender for time wasting before taking a throw-in on 78 minutes. Shaw then fouled Italy goalscorer Mateo Retegui just a minute later.

After a short period of deliberation, the Serbian official brandished a second yellow card to Shaw, forcing England to play the final period of the game with 10 men.

They managed to keep their advantage and win a crucial first game of their Euro 2024 qualifying group - but Palmer was not happy with Shaw after the game.

Carlton Palmer on Luke Shaw

The former midfielder, who received 18 caps for England between 1992 and 1993, gave his opinion on Shaw's red card in Naples, and his general defensive qualities, to talkSPORT on Friday.

He said: "I don't know how Shaw gets away with it, I really don't. I think he's a poor, poor defender."

"I think he's had a decent season at Manchester United, but I think he's a poor defender. Every time he comes up and is asked the question about his defending, he can't, he fails," Palmer went on to claim.

"How he doesn't get sent off more often, I don't know. I hear all the arguments about Trent Alexander-Arnold and I see that he has some defensive frailties but I think he's a terrific player and offers a lot going forward."

Palmer also said he believes that United need to bring in another left-back to challenge for the Premier League next season, and also claimed: "I look at him, I don't think he looks fit. First and foremost, he's in the Manchester United side or England side to defend.

"I mean it would upset me to be honest with you. If I'm not playing well [like Harry] Maguire, but if he's being picked ahead of me at centre-back, I'd have gone and knocked on the door and I'd have been away. Full stop. I'm not bothered about my contract. If you're picking Luke Shaw at centre-back ahead of me, I'm gone."
