"Dumb money" - Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already made his feelings clear over Manchester United transfers

Prospective Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already made his feelings clear about the club’s transfer policy under the Glazers

Prospective Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already made his feelings clear about the club’s transfer policy under the Glazers.

On Tuesday, Man Utd’s owners the Glazer family announced that they were “commencing a process to explore strategic alternatives” for Man Utd.

The news, which shocked the financial and sporting world, could see the Glazers end their controversial 17-year spell at the Man Utd helm

A statement from Man Utd claimed that the process will consider several options “including new investment into the club, a sale, or other transactions involving the company”.

And according to the Independent, British Billionaire Sir Jim, who Forbes value at a staggering $13.5billion (£11.18billion), will bid for the club.

The publication claims that the Ineos owner’s childhood support for the Red Devils makes it “too tempting and unique” to not engage in the process.

“Dumb money”

Like most Man Utd fans Sir Jim has been critical of the Glazers’ running of the club in the past.

In a 2019 interview with The Times, Sir Jim explained why he had opted to buy a team from France’s Ligue 1 - Nice - rather than a Premier League outfit.

In doing so, however, the 70-year-old was scathing of Man Utd’s current ownership, as well as Man Utd’s much-derided central midfielder, Fred.

While not ruling out buying a Premier League team, he explained: “Ineos [his multinational chemicals company] never wants to be the dumb money in town, never, never.”

On the Glazers he continued: “[They won't sell] at the moment, no.

“They are in quite a big pickle as a business. They haven’t got the manager selection right, haven’t bought well.

“They have been the dumb money, which you see with players like Fred.”
