Man Utd make goalkeeper decision as club 'in talks' over international star signing

Man Utd are reportedly close to completing the signing of Yann Sommer - and are set to make a decision on the future of Martin Dubravka.

Manchester United are in talks with Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer over a move to Old Trafford, and have now made a decision on the future of one of their current shot-stoppers, according to reports.

After arriving at the club in the summer, Erik ten Hag made the signing of a goalkeeper a main transfer priority.

David de Gea is currently the number one choice, with backup Dean Henderson out on loan at Nottingham Forest.

Ten Hag eventually completed the signing of Martin Dubravka in the summer, with the Slovakian stopper on loan from Newcastle. The 33-year-old has been restricted to Carabao Cup action this term, as well as Wednesday's friendly victory over Cadiz in Spain.

But it appears that the Red Devils are searching for a more permanent solution in the upcoming months - and Sommer has been heavily linked with a move.

Yann Sommer to Man Utd?

ESPN report that United are in talks over completing a deal for Sommer as they look to add competition for De Gea.

It is claimed that a deal would be done in the summer, rather than in January. The Switzerland international's current contract at Monchengladbach expires at the end of the season, meaning he would move to United for free if a move is agreed.

De Gea, meanwhile, is also out of contract in the summer. However, much like a host of other stars in United's squad, the club have an option to extend his deal by a further year.

It is also claimed that this is likely to be the decision the Red Devils take - despite previous reports that Sommer would be the Spaniard's replacement.

And, in a new development, Metro report that the club will not decide to make Dubravka's deal permanent at the end of the season.

Therefore, the door will likely be open for a new shot-stopper to walk through the Old Trafford doors, and that could well be Sommer.

The Switzerland goalkeeper was an ever-present for his side at the World Cup, and played a crucial role in their run to the quarter-finals of Euro 2020.

The 33-year-old has made over 250 appearances for Monchengladbach since joining in 2014, and would therefore add further domestic and international experience to United's goalkeeping ranks, should he join the club.
