Fan breaks down every Premier League club's rumoured net spend, Man City emerge as surprise winners from transfer window

Manchester City emerge as unlikely winners.

A football fan has broken down every Premier League club’s rumoured net spend during both this summer’s transfer window and over the last five seasons, and the results are surprising.

The Reddit user posted a series of graphics online detailing the purported sales and expenditure of each club, with Manchester City emerging favourably with a net spend in the most recent window of -£70.66m.

According to the graphic, City received £194.35m in player sales this summer alone, with the departure of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal, as well as the sale of Raheem Sterling to Chelsea, contributing heavily to that total.

City’s expenditure, which includes the £51m signing of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, stands at £123.69m.

Across five seasons, only Crystal Palace, Brighton, Leicester, Bournemouth and Brentford have a lower net spend than the Premier League champions.

By comparison, after several high-profile acquisitions including Sterling, Marc Cucurella, Antony and Casemiro, rivals Chelsea and Manchester United’s rumoured net spend for this summer was a staggering £237m and £196.7m, respectively.

Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, had the third-highest total with £170.79m after making a British record 21 signings in a single transfer window.

Unsurprisingly, over the last five years, it is United who have the highest net spend with a total of £579.2m. That equates to a per-year average of £115.84m.

In response to Manchester City’s impressive numbers, one user wrote: “Also hugely shrewd business this window. Haaland and Alvarez alone already look like absolute steals.”

Another added: “It’s absolutely insane to me that City sold 3 first team players, to direct rivals, and are still just as strong if not stronger than last season.”
