Manchester United Agree Deal With Ralf Rangnick To Become Interim Manager

Ralf Rangnick is set to become Manchester United's interim manager, after agreeing a six month deal to the end of the season, according to reports.

United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday, following the 4-1 embarrassment by Watford the previous day, with a view to hiring an interim boss for the rest of the season.

Michael Carrick took charge of the Champions League victory against Villarreal on Tuesday night, and will still be in charge for Sunday's game against Chelsea.

The Premier League side had a five man shortlist to take the reigns from Carrick and, according to the Athletic, have now agreed a deal for Rangnick.

The 63-year-old, who has previously managed RB Leipzig, is currently head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow and the Russian club will need to agree to release him, though it's not expected to be a problem.

Rangnick's deal is said to be six months as interim boss, which will take him up to May, but then he will continue as a consultant for the next two years.

Whilst United have moved swiftly, perhaps quicker than many detractors would have expected, it will still be Carrick in charge at the weekend.

Rangnick will have to get his work permit approved, which will likely mean his first game in charge is in a week's time, at home against Arsenal.

The Old Trafford club will hope that the appointment of a seasoned manager as caretaker will have the kind of effect that Rafa Benitez and Guus Hiddink had during their interim spells at Chelsea.

The appointment should also end the discussion that the Premier League side have given up on the current season.

The new bosses work as a consultant past the current season will also excite United fans, with the German's history of developing teams from above a good indicator.

He has been director of football at both Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig and helped the latter climb from the regional divisions in Germany to the Bundesliga and helped develop their model of signing and improving young players.

United's number one target for the managerial role after the interim boss leaves next summer is believed to be Mauricio Pochettino.

The PSG boss has been linked with leaving his role before the end of the season but Thursday's development suggests he will stay there for the current campaign.
