Former Man Utd star set to join European giants instead of returning to Old Trafford

Former Man Utd star set to join European giants instead of returning to Old Trafford

Former Manchester United defender Daley Blind has agreed to join Bayern Munich, according to reports.

Former Manchester United defender Daley Blind has agreed to join Bayern Munich, and will not be making a move back to Old Trafford, according to reports.

Blind had his Ajax contract terminated by mutual consent last month, and it officially expired on December 31 - a day before the January transfer window opened.

He was, therefore, eligible to move to another club on a free transfer, and Bayern is set to be his next destination.

Blind started all five of Netherlands' games at the World Cup, playing at left-back and left wing-back ahead of United defender Tyrell Malacia.

The 31-year-old left the Red Devils in the summer of 2018 after a four-year spell. During that time, he played various roles for the club, including centre-back and defensive midfield. Former United boss Jose Mourinho described Blind as 'one of the most professional players, both on and off the pitch, that I have had the pleasure to work with'.

Following the announcement of his imminent Ajax departure, some United fans called on current boss Erik ten Hag to bring Blind back to Old Trafford.

However, there is no indication that United made any move to re-sign their former defender, and he has reportedly agreed to join the Bundesliga champions.

Ex-Man Utd defender Blind set for Bayern

According to The Athletic, Blind is set to undergo a medical ahead of a move to Bayern Munich.

Julian Nagelsmann's side suffered a major blow in November, when defender Lucas Hernandez tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during France's opening World Cup group stage game against Australia. He will miss the rest of the season.

It is unclear how long Blind's proposed contract at the Allianz Arena will run until, but the Netherlands international's versatility will likely be crucial for Bayern as they look to defend their Bundesliga crown.

With almost 500 career appearances and 15 trophies to his name, Blind will also add valuable experience to the Bayern side, who remain in the Champions League and take on PSG in the last 16 stage next month.
