German legend admits Bayern Munich were stunned by Sabitzer's move to Man Utd

German legend admits Bayern Munich were stunned by Sabitzer's move to Man Utd

It all happened so quickly.

Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller has admitted he was surprised at Marcel Sabitzer's loan move to Manchester United on deadline day.

Erik ten Hag signed Marcel Sabitzer as a last minute replacement for Christian Eriksen after the Dane picked up an injury that would see him sidelined until late April or May.

Sabitzer has struggled to break into the Bayern team under current manager Julian Nagelsmann, seeing a loan as a good opportunity for more regular game time.

However, Muller revealed that his teammates were left surprised by the move, insisting he is a 'super player'

"The team was surprised. It happened very quickly," Müller said in an interview with Kicker.

"I'm happy for 'Sabi' that he's moving to Manchester United and that he's getting the chance to play there. Manchester is a huge name.

"But he will be back in the summer. The chapter here is not over yet," emphasised the 33-year-old, adding that Sabitzer is "a cool guy and a super player".

Sabitzer is contracted at Bayern until 2025. But according to The Telegraph's Jason Burt, United hold an option to buy should he do well at Old Trafford. However, there is no obligation.

Will Sabitzer play against Crystal Palace?

The Red Devils host Crystal Palace on Saturday, with Sabitzer in contention for his Premier League debut. Ten Hag confirmed he would be a part of the squad in his press conference on Friday, revealing 'he could start'.

When asked how the 28-year-old has adapted to life in England following his deadline day move, the United boss said: “Very good. Of course, he did only one session but you can see he's a very fit player.

"I didn't have a different expectation. He's coming from Bayern Munich. German [clubs] they are always [about] fitness, [it's] always good. So, he is [fit].

"So, I think he is ready to play. I think he's a really smart player. I think we gave him some guidance but I think he knows what to do, he knows the job, so he could do (start).”
