Man Utd ready to hand England star 'mega deal' to convince him to join as contract talks stall

Man Utd ready to hand England star 'mega deal' to convince him to join as contract talks stall

This would be a turn up for the books.

Manchester United are said to be considering signing England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, with the club willing to double his wages, according to reports.

The news comes just days after the club reportedly agreed on a new wage structure that would limit players earning over £200k, following the termination of Cristiano Ronaldo's lofty wage bill.

However, the Red Devils appear willing to break the bank for the Everton star, with the club prepared to double his £100k per-week wages, report The Sun.

Pickford to Manchester United

United are expected to face competition, with Tottenham also thought to be vying for his signature. Although, Pickford's preference is to stay at Everton, claim the Daily Star.

One source close to Pickford told The Sun: "Jordan wants to stay at Everton. He loves the place, and is settled in the area he lives. But the club is not willing to meet the wage increase he is asking for."

And Erik ten Hag is willing to meet the 28-year-old's demands, despite current number 1 David de Gea agreeing to a pay cut, in order to take him below the £200k threshold.

However, Jadon Sancho, Casemiro, Raphael Varane, Anthony Martial, and Bruno Fernandes are all believed to earn over the new limit, indicating a lack of cohesion within the new wage structure.

Butland discusses United transfer

The interest surrounding Pickford may come as a surprise following their recent signing of Jack Butland on loan.

The Red Devils secured the services of 29-year-old in recent days, providing back up to David De Gea following the departure of Martin Dubravka, who has been recalled from loan by his parent club Newcastle.

The Englishman, on loan from Crystal Palace, had this to say on his move: "This is an amazing club and one that I am now proud to represent. I’m really looking forward to working with an unbelievable goalkeeping group, supporting each other every day to create the best training and playing environment for the team."

“I’ve played against David de Gea and represented England alongside Tom Heaton; they are top-class keepers, and I am relishing the opportunity to compete alongside and support them as team-mates," Butland added.

It is difficult to envisage a team where De Gea or Pickford are willing to play second fiddle. So, one would expect if the Everton goalkeeper was to join the Red Devils, De Gea may seek a move elsewhere.
