Manchester United treble winner, who hosted cooking show whilst at United, wins Masterchef

Manchester United treble winner, who hosted cooking show whilst at United, wins Masterchef

It's been a very different 24 years for one United player who won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League compared to his teammates.

Manchester United treble winners have gone on to become managers, pundits and club owners, but one of them has gone on to become a Masterchef winner.

It's nearly 24 years since United won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League all in the same season, something that's never been repeated by another English side.

Of course some fans would probably think it feels like 24 years since they even won the league but that hasn't quite reached the decade mark just yet.

It's not hard to find a player of that side on television these days, whether that's Gary Neville, telling fans Arsenal won't even finish second this season, Paul Scholes or Roy Keane doing television punditry.

Another member of that famous side, who isn't very often heard from despite starting the Champions League final, has made a very different career choice.

Former winger Jesper Blomqvist, who started the final against Bayern Munich on the left due to Keane and Scholes being suspended, has become the champion of Celebrity Masterchef in Sweden.

Taking to social media about the win, the 48-year-old said, "What a lovely competitor I had on the other side of the kitchen table in Karl Fredrik Gustafsson and what an exciting final it was.

"Even though I knew the result, I got all sweaty watching it on TV. Incredibly happy, grateful and humble for the win, know that you Karl-Fredrik might as well have won, it was an incredibly tough & even final.

"The whole production has been amazingly funny, educational but also tough. Then it helps to have such awesome competitors, jury members and the rest of the recording team who supports, pepper and spurs, thank you all for a wonderful adventure."

Blomqvist started his career in his home country, winning three league titles with IFK Gothenburg, before moving to Serie A with AC Milan and later Parma.

He joined United at the start of their treble season for just over £4 million, after Sir Alex Ferguson had previously tried to sign him from Gothenburg, having seen him in the Champions League against his side.

The winger played 25 times in the league that season, scoring once, and earning himself a winners medal, doubling his silverware despite being an unused substitute in the FA Cup final.

He started in the Nou Camp after Keane and Scholes both picked up yellow cards in the second leg of the semi-final, against Juventus, with Ryan Giggs starting on the right and David Beckham in central midfield.

Blomqvist struggled in the game and was replaced in the 67th minute by Teddy Sheringham, who scored the first goal and set up the second, as United completed their famous comeback.

A knee injury would mean he never again played for the Red Devils but, funnily enough, the club gave him a cooking show on their channel, MUTV, called Cooking with Jesper.

The former Sweden international, who earned a bronze medal at the 1994 World Cup with his country, actually owns a pizzeria in Stockholm.

He has played in a number of charity games of United Legends in previous years, including being reunited with his teammates for a game with Bayern Munich Legends in 2019 to celebrate 20 years since the Treble.

In the two decades since that famous game, Blomqvist has potentially had the most interesting life and now he's picked up yet more silverware.
