David Ornstein confirms Mason Mount is 'leaning towards' joining Man Utd over Liverpool and Arsenal

This is a major boost for the Red Devils.

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount is 'leaning towards a move' to Manchester United over Liverpool and Arsenal, according to reports.

Mount has been the subject of mass speculation after it emerged he was unhappy with his wage compared to other senior players at Stamford Bridge.

With his contract due to expire at the end of the season, several Premier League clubs are placed on red alert should the 24-year-old become available.

While Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel is also thought to be interested, knowing the player well from his days as Chelsea manager.

However, Manchester United are now said to be Mount's personal preference, in a major boost for Erik ten Hag.

Mount 'leaning towards' Man Utd move

The Red Devils are in the market for midfield recruits this summer, with the likes of Scott McTominay and Fred both rumoured with Old Trafford exits.

While there are no signs of Marcel Sabitzer extending his stay at the club after arriving on loan from Bayern.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, "Mount is leaning towards a move to Manchester United and talks are expected between the two clubs in due course."

The report adds that other clubs interested in the England international are "aware of his preference", although "a number of hurdles still must be cleared" in order to strike a deal.

For instance, incoming Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is allegedly eager to incorporate Mount in his squad for next season, meaning there could be a late twist in the tale.

However, this may still depend on both parties agreeing a new long-term deal, with negotiations having been ongoing since last summer.

Liverpool were initially thought to be in pole position for the player's signature, but their growing pursuit of Alexis Mac Allister could see them lose out.

Arsenal have also been credited with an interest, with Mikel Arteta keen on adding two central midfielders to his ranks this summer.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League clash against United on Wednesday, caretaker manager Frank Lampard was asked if the Mount situation is beginning to feel like a lost cause for the Blues.

“I don’t know,” Lampard said. “That’s not my answer to make. That’s between Mason and the club.”

After being left out of Gareth Southgate's England squad on Wednesday, Mount will know that whether he stays or goes this summer, first team football must be a guarantee in order to force his way back into the national side.
