Matt Le Tissier slams 'woke' Gareth Southgate after claiming he's offered to 'coach' England in the past

Matt Le Tissier slams 'woke' Gareth Southgate after claiming he's offered to 'coach' England in the past

Le Tissier chat with Nigel Farage has gone viral.

Matt Le Tissier has unloaded on 'woke' England manager Gareth Southgate, claiming he wouldn't take his advice on how his players should take penalties.

The Southampton legend scored 47 of 48 penalties taken in his 17-year career, an impressive record.

During an appearance on GBNews, Le Tissier said he's previously asked if Three Lions stars need advice on converting from 12 yards out.

"I have offered my services to go and coach the players if they want advice on taking penalties," the 54-year-old declared.

Host Nigel Farage joked Southgate needs to give his guest a call. Things quickly got bizarre. Check out the video below.

Le Tissier replied: "To be fair, I mean, there were probably other managers that may have been more likely to listen than the woke Mr Southgate.

That brought a laugh from the crowd in Southampton. Farage interjected: "I haven't even got him onto Gary Lineker yet!"

Once the crowd had finished, Le Tissier continued: "I would quite happily take a penalty still, at my age. I really enjoyed the pressure of those situations.

"I really looked forward to taking penalties. And I think one of the biggest things you can have as a penalty-taker is your mindset going into it has to be really positive.

"And I believe that was one of the biggest reasons why my penalty record was good."

England have only won one penalty shootout at a World Cup. Southgate's side overcame Colombia in Russia four years ago en route to the semi-finals.

Last year, they were beaten by Italy in the final of Euro 2020. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka's misses were the difference as England saw their first glimpse of silverware since 1966 fade away.

England are on a poor run of form heading into their Group B opener against Iran on Monday, having not won in their last six games.

When asked if he believes England can win the World Cup, Le Tissier declared: "'I suspect not. As much as I would love them to win the World Cup, I think with my realistic cap on I think there are perhaps better teams than us.

"However, you never know. Football's a funny game."

Le Tissier left his role as a Southampton ambassador in April, shortly after a series of tweets related to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The year prior, he was sacked by Sky Sports.
