Liverpool Hit Wage Ceiling In Contract Talks With Mo Salah

Liverpool Hit Wage Ceiling In Contract Talks With Mo Salah

Liverpool have made their final contract offer to Mo Salah, and it likely won't be enough to keep him at the club long term.

Liverpool have hit their wage ceiling in talks with Mo Salah over a new contract, and it likely won't be enough to convince the Egyptian forward to sign a new deal, according to reports.

Salah is said to want £400k per week in order to stay at Merseyside, double his current wages, and a figure that would bring him in line with Kevin De Bruyne as the second highest paid player in the Premier League, behind just Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Egyptian, understandably, wants to be one of the best paid players in the division.

He has recently received the PFA Player of the Year award for the 2021/22 season, and is undisputedly one of the very best players in the league

Mo Salah’s current contract expires in 2023 and the Reds are keen to agree to an extension, as they fear losing one of the best players in the world on a free next summer otherwise.

However senior figures at the club are unwilling to compromise on their wage structure.

They believe the amount Salah is asking for would put him so far out of line with other star players (Van Dijk is currently Liverpool’s top paid player on £220,000 a week) that it could do more harm than good to the club.

The Egyptian has had a very successful time at Liverpool since joining the club in 2017 for £37m. He's scored 118 goals in just 180 games and has won the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup and the League Cup during his spell on Merseyside.

Sources inside the club say they have ‘no worries’ about Salah’s mentality next season, regardless of the outcome of contract negotiations this summer.

However, losing a player so loved on Merseyside could harm already fraught tensions between Liverpool’s supporters and owners.

With Mané and Minamino with one foot already out the door, Liverpool will need to find a way to replace one of the greatest attacking units of the Premier League era.
