Neal Maupay Was Starstruck By Thierry Henry After Last Minute Goal For Brighton

Maupay equalised against Crystal Palace with a last minute lob that Arsenal legend Henry would have been pretty happy with himself.

Neal Maupay was as happy with his post match interview with Thierry Henry as he was with his late goal, as he was speaking to the man whose goals he grew up watching.

Brighton had the chance to go top of the Premier League table on Monday night when they faced rivals Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Instead it looked like they were heading for defeat, following Wilfried Zaha's goal from the penalty spot in injury time at the end of the first half, after Leandro Trossard brought down Conor Gallagher in the box.

With commentators talking about the loss for Graham Potter's team, as 94 minutes of the game ticked over, Maupay pounced on a bouncing ball, following a poor goal kick from Palace, and lobbed Vicente Guaita to make it 1-1.

After the match, Maupay was interviewed on Monday Night Football by Henry, a man accustomed to the kind of beautiful finish he'd seen from his fellow Frenchman, and the Brighton forward was a little bit starstruck of his interviewer.

Henry is obviously an Arsenal legend but Maupay isn't so popular in the red half of north London, after his clash with several Gunners in 2020.

The Brighton striker was involved in the incident where Bernd Leno was stretchered off in a game against the Seagulls in June last year, with the keeper blaming the former Brentford striker for his injury.

Maupay then rubbed salt in the wound as he grabbed a 95th minute goal, as he did on Monday, to shock Mikel Arteta's team and win all three points.

Matteo Guendouzi was later sent off for grabbing his fellow countryman by the throat at the full time whistle, and the Brighton star claimed the Gunners needed to learn humility, making him all rather unpopular at the Emirates.

Clearly though, the 25-year-old hasn't let that get in the way of his respect for Henry, however he'll put that love aside when he faces the Premier League legend's beloved Arsenal on Saturday.
