Newcastle Agree Terms With One Of Euro 2020's Standout Players, Want To Triple His Wages

Newcastle United have reportedly agreed terms with Atalanta wing-back Robin Gosens and want to triple his wages.

The Magpies have already added Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood to their squad in January and are keen to dip into the market once again.

Sky Italia have claimed Newcastle are interested in Gosens and are advancing quickly, already agreeing personal terms.

Newcastle are set to offer the 27-year-old a contract worth £2.5 million per year.

Gosens scored 11 goals and registered six assists in 32 appearances last season to seal Champions League qualification for Atalanta.

He'd then go to Euro 2020 with Germany and put in an incredible performance against Portugal in one of the games of the tournament.

Gosens scored and registered two assists in that game, which put him on the radar of some of Europe's top clubs.

He's been out of action since September with a hamstring injury and he isn't expected to return until February.

Newcastle want it to be guaranteed he'll be fit to return for that time before making an official offer to Atalanta.

The signing of Trippier from Atletico Madrid indicates manager Eddie Howe is keen to improve Newcastle's attack on the flanks.

Wood's arrival from relegation rivals Burnley weakens the Clarets but also offers a focal point up front at St James' Park.

Newcastle started the weekend in the relegation zone and New Zealand international Wood started against Watford in a massive match at the bottom.

When asked about adding the 30-year-old to his squad, Howe replied: "He is a very dangerous attacking threat, has a physicality and character that I really like, and he has vast experience in the Premier League.

"Chris is an important signing for us at a crucial time and I'm very pleased we have been able to move quickly and bring him here.” 

Wood has scored three games in 17 appearances so far this campaign.

Survival will now be at the front of Newcastle's mind following a shock elimination in the FA Cup third round at the hands of Cambridge United.
