An emotional Robbie Savage nearly broke down in tears discussing his son, Charlie, making the Manchester United bench for the first time.

United manager Ralf Rangnick has made a number of changes for tonight's Champions League clash with Young Boys.

He's given a number of senior players the night off and the entire bench is made up of academy graduates.

One of them is 18-year-old Savage, who signed his first professional deal in April.

The game is live on BT Sport and Savage will be commentating, meaning he could see his son step onto the Old Trafford pitch from the gantry.

Savage, who was in the United academy but never made a professional appearance for the club, was interviewed prior to the game and his immense pride was clear to see.

"I'm starting to tear up Jake, what the boy has achieved... Charlie Savage has achieved so much in his young life," Savage said while composing himself.

"He's never been top of the group, he's always had to meet targets.

"Every two years when he was on the borderline of being let go, his application, his work ethic, his desire, he's humble. That has got him to where he's got."

Savage Jr is described as a technical midfielder and has impressed at youth level for the Red Devils.

He's also represented Wales at Under 19 level, making his debut earlier this year.

"As a father, when I'm standing on the sidelines, people automatically think Charlie is going to be like his dad but he's not like me, he's his own player. What he's achieved in his young life, I'm absolutely delighted."

Other youngsters to make the bench include Zidane Iqbal and Shola Shoretire, alongside Bjorn Hardley, Teden Mengi, Matej Kovar and the experienced Tom Heaton.
