Liverpool could soon be receiving another tidy payment from Barcelona through a clause they inserted in the deal that took Philippe Coutinho from Anfield to the Nou Camp.

The Brazilian sealed a big-money move in January 2018 for a fee that could eventually reach £142 million and more than two years on, that final total is in sight.

If Coutinho plays 100 official games for Barcelona, the Blaugrana must pay Liverpool an extra £18 million for his services.

He's currently featured 90 times and so a further ten outings will see yet another clause triggered in an extremely costly transfer for a player who hasn't quite got going in Catalonia.

As per Sport, struggling Barca want to offload him in the January window before he reaches a century of appearances and The Athletic say they are willing to accept offers in the region of £45 million.

Coutinho spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich and won a historic treble, infamously scoring twice as as a substitute in the 8-2 thrashing of his parent club in the Champions League quarter finals.

Bayern decided against signing him permanently for a reported €120 million and so he returned to Barcelona, where he's played 12 times in all competitions this term under new manager Ronald Koeman.

Coutinho has lifted two La Liga titles with Barcelona in addition to his success on loan at Bayern, but in that time Liverpool have become European, world and Premier League champions.

Asked whether he had any regrets over his departure in an interview back in February, he told Sports Illustrated: "I don't look back.

"I took another path, and now I am on another journey, much like everyone else.

"I'm focused entirely - just like them - on reaching my dreams. I'm happy with what I did in the past, and now I can only look forward.

"Liverpool is flying, and it doesn't surprise me.

"We've seen it already last year when they won the Champions League, but I'm also not surprised because of their fantastic squad and manager.

"I am so happy for them, because I have so many friends there, former team-mates, so I'm just so happy for them, but that's all."
