BREAKING: Manchester United Beat Southampton To Win The EFL Cup

The first piece of silverware has been claimed.

Manchester United have bagged the first piece of major silverware for the 2016/2017 season. United beat Southampton 3-2 in a thrilling cup final.

Southampton's trip to the national stadium was their first visit since winning the Johnstone's Paint Trophy against Carlisle in 2001.

The Saints - who lost their previous League Cup final - against Nottingham Forest in 1979, beat United for their only major trophy, the 1976 FA Cup.

Meanwhile, Manchester United featured in their ninth league club final with their last appearance coming in 2010 where they beat Aston Villa.

The road to the final.

United progressed to the final following their victory over Hull City. They beat their counterparts two-nil, before losing the return leg 2-1. But ultimately secured passage to the Wembley showpiece.

Southampton pipped the most successful club in the competition, Liverpool - to earn their spot opposite United.

Claude Puel's charges beat Liverpool 1-0 in both legs giving them the chance to bag their first major trophy since 1976.

Defending champions - Manchester City.

Manchester City won the trophy last season following their dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Liverpool.

Argentine keeper Willy Caballero produced heroics saving vital pens to eventually win their second league cup in three seasons.

Though the defending champions were dumped out of the competition this campaign after drawing cross-town rivals United in the last 16, losing 1-0.
