Michael Carrick Responds To Paul Scholes Saying He Should've Been Sacked

He took charge of his first game as caretaker boss on Tuesday, managing his side to victory against Villarreal in the Champions League.

But, before taking his seat in the dug-out, Carrick was ruthlessly slammed by Scholes for remaining at the club following the sacking of the Norwegian.

On BT Sport, Scholes said: "I feel with Ole he put a lot of trust into Michael, Kieran and Mike Phelan which is why they shouldn't be at the club now.

"They're all good friends and they're good people but if I was them, I'd feel guilty still working at the club after Ole put so much trust in them.

"I'd be embarrassed to be on the staff now after what happened to Ole.

"Being on the staff and preparing the team for tonight, they all should have gone. Ole trusted them each week to get the team prepared for games. They've let the club down, the players down, as much as Ole has."

Well, after guiding Man United to victory against Villarreal, Carrick dismissed Scholes' comments.

He said: "It's not an important result for me personally. It's an important one for the players and the club

"It's an important result for the players, tonight is not about me by any stretch.

"It's obviously been an emotional few days. The first person I spoke to after Ed [Woodward] asked me to do this role was Ole, to almost see what he thought about it because I felt that was the right thing to do."
