Draw For Champions League Quarter Final And Semi Final

Manchester City were handed a tough potential route to their first ever Champions League final, with the quarter finals and semi finals draw.

After coming through their last 16 game against Borussia Monchengladbach, Pep Guardiola's side could have a very German route to their first European title.

On Friday morning, the Premier League champions drew Borussia Dortmund in the quarter finals, giving them a close up look at Erling Haaland, who they've been heavily linked with.

Should they win that then they could face Bayern Munich in the semi finals, with the defending champions facing a repeat of last season's final, against PSG, in the quarters.

Elsewhere there is a repeat of the 2019 final, as Liverpool take on Real Madrid in the quarters and the winners will take on either Porto, who beat Juventus in the previous round, or Chelsea.

Quarter finals:

Manchester City vs Borussia Dortmund

Porto vs Chelsea

Bayern Munich vs PSG

Real Madrid vs Liverpool

Semi finals:

Bayern Munich/PSG vs Manchester City/Borussia Dortmund

Real Madrid/Liverpool vs Porto/Chelsea

The match up against Haaland will be extremely interesting for City, who have seemed nearly unbeatable in recent months, with the strong links between the two.

As well as the transfer rumours, Haaland's father used to play for the blue half of Manchester. Haaland junior is the lead scorer in the Champions League this season, and became the quickest player to score 20 goals in the competition's history.

The competition usually heats up in the knockout stages but in truth it wasn't the most exciting second legs in the last 16 this year.

All eight teams who led after the first legs went through, although it wasn't as straight forward for some as it was others.

Defending champions Bayern Munich found it easiest against Lazio, winning the 2nd leg 2-1 on Wednesday, to give them a 6-2 aggregate win.

Things were just as easy for Liverpool and Manchester City, who both won 4-0 on aggregate, winning both legs 2-0.

PSG, Real Madrid and Chelsea all ended up going through with leads of three goals, although none of their ties were quite so simple.

Borussia Dortmund's 3-2 win in the first leg away from home was enough to see them through after a 2-2 draw against Sevilla in Germany, after Erling Haaland's controversial penalty 'celebration.'

And Porto needed extra time, and an away goal, to cause the shock of the round to knock out Juventus, after winning the first leg 2-1.

Despite a red card in the second leg, they went through thanks to Sergio Oliveira's long range free kick, that Cristiano Ronaldo turned his back on.

The stats suggest that City are the most likely winners this year, despite the fact they've never previously reached the final.

Pep Guardiola's side have been knocked out in the quarter final stages in the past three seasons and the former Barcelona boss hasn't made the final since winning the competition for the second time in 2011.

This season's final will take place in Istanbul at the Ataturk Arena, where Liverpool famously came from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan on penalties in the 2005 final.

Originally last year's final was meant to take place there but it was moved to Portugal, along with the quarters and semis, due to Covid-19.
