A Chelsea player looked set to make his first appearance for the club in nearly eight years when the Blues face Brentford in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, reports The Sun.

Lewis Baker made his first-team debut for the club back in January 2014, but struggled to cement his place in the squad under a series of managers, and subsequently played out on loan nine times for clubs in the Netherlands, the EFL, Germany and Turkey.

Jose Mourinho was in his second spell in charge for Baker's first and only appearance in a Chelsea shirt to date, as he came off the bench to replace Oscar in 2-0 win away at Derby County.

But the 26-year-old is now back in west London playing for the under-23s, and was in line to face Brentford in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals before contracting COVID-19 and therefore being ruled out.

He was one e of 12 players from that squad to be called up to train with the first team, along with Teddy Sharman-Lowe, 18, Josh Brooking, 19, Xavier Mbuyamba, 19, Alfie Gilchrist, 18, Dion Rankine, 19, and Xavier Simons, 18, who all took part in Monday's session.

Additionally, Lewis Hall, 17, Joe Haigh, 18, Harvey Vale, 18, Bryan Fiabema, 18, and Jay Wareham, 18, were also reportedly involved.

Thomas Tuchel's side have been hit by a Covid-19 outbreak in the squad, and the German was clearly aggrieved that their previous Premier League fixture away at Wolves went ahead on Sunday.

They are next scheduled to face Aston Villa on Sunday, but there are fears the game could be postponed with the Villans also hit by the virus.

Chelsea's form dipped in recent weeks after managing just one win in their last Premier League four games - a sequence of results which has seen them slip six points behind league leaders Manchester City.
