Graeme Souness has questioned why Manchester United have signed Jadon Sancho after the star forward was named on the bench for their game against Southampton.

For the second Premier League game in a row, Sancho finds himself on the bench.

And Sky Sports pundit Souness believes that Man United could have coped without the England international this season due to the club's firepower in attack.

He referenced Mason Greenwood, who starts against the Saints, saying: "Jadon Sancho... I'm not sure if they really need him because you've got Greenwood who can fill in a wider area, although I think he will ultimately be through the middle."

Sancho, of course, joined Man United this summer in a transfer worth a reported Β£73 million from Borussia Dortmund.

He made a cameo appearance against Leeds United last weekend and will have to come off the bench to make an appearance against Southampton.

Speaking about his decision to name Sancho as a substitute, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: "Of course, you're tempted [to start Varane and Sancho] but you need to give them the foundation.

"Jadon played in the week so he's more ready than Raphael but he's had a good week of training."
