Granit Xhaka And Stephan Lichtsteiner Took The Worst Free-Kick Of All-Time For Switzerland

An utterly pointless routine...

We're a sucker for a creative free-kick routine but the one that Granit Xhaka and Stephan Lichtsteiner came up with against Denmark on Saturday was just utterly dreadful.

Switzerland had a set-piece in a pretty good position but Arsenal skipper Xhaka and former Gunners' defender Lichtsteiner decide to try something different.

They both ran around the ball, faking to take the free-kick in attempt to create space for an opening down the right flank. Unfortunately for them, however, the run was tracked and they were made to look very silly.

It was supposed to be a routine straight off the training ground but in the end Xhaka, having hesitated to play the ball into the path of his teammate, just curled the ball into the box and saw the free-kick defended.

The piece of play is so strange that even the other Switzerland players did not have a clue. The Benny Hill music would fit perfectly dubbed alongside the clip.

Somehow the Swiss duo have managed to outdo the shoddy free-kick efforts of Portugal pair William Carvalho and Ricardo Quaresma in 2018.

It started off quite well, with Carvalho and Quaresma suckering the Mexico defenders in with deft dummies.

That was about as good as it got though, as Quaresma opted to play the ball back to his teammate, who when pressured by the opposition, panicked and passed the ball straight out of play for a throw-in.
