Raul Jimenez scored Mexico's match winner against the Netherlands and shut down Virgil van Dijk who said he didn't know many of their players.

Liverpool star Van Dijk failed to mention the Wolves striker when asked what Mexico players he knew ahead of the Netherlands' international friendly.

"I know about Javier Hernández, Hirving Lozano, but he is not going to play [due to testing positive for coronavirus] and some other few players," he said.

"It is very hard to play against Mexican footballers and everyone knows that as a team they are very tough to beat. It should be an intense game and we always want to win."

Despite scoring against Liverpool last season, the Dutchman didn't bring up Jimenez who happened to score the only goal of the game on Wednesday.

Mexico beat the Netherlands 1-0 thanks to a penalty from Wolves' No.9.

And speaking after the victory, he brushed off Van Dijk's comments while reminding him of his goal against the Reds when they met.

"It is not a big deal all I can say is that I scored against him already," he said.

"Maybe he didn't mention my name yesterday because he forgot maybe. I am focused on my club and the national team and my goals speak for myself."

Jimenez silencing Van Dijk didn't go unnoticed by fans on social media.

Mexico, meanwhile, have another friendly against Algeria next Tuesday while the Netherlands face Bosnia & Herzegovina and Italy.
