A fan received a signed poster from former Germany striker Mario Gomez after playing 2000 games with him on FIFA 20.

Staunch VFB Stuttgart supporter Markus Kilzheimer loves Gomez and his classic button/song and took his fandom to serious heights on Ultimate Team.

Ridiculously, the 76-rated striker bagged over 2000 goals as he led the line with distinction on the virtual football game.

The incredible project involving the former Bayern Munich marksman blew up on online - to the point where avid FIFA player Markus became known as 'the Gomez guy'.

Gomez himself became aware and much to Markus' surprise, sent a poster signed with a marker pen.

"I've had this journey going for the whole year and many people asked me if Gomez ever noticed the posts and articles about it.

"And someday someone on Facebook sent the article directly to him. I waited and one day I had the signed poster in the mail.

"He didn't personally get in touch with me but assuming he knew about the Gomez guy. He probably read that article sent about my journey.

"I was happy but also a little skeptical if it's real or not so my first reaction was to check if the signature is real and if the pen used was the same on all cards especially the one saying for 'the Gomez guy', Markus.

"It definitely made my day. It's nothing I expected so it's a great surprise he at least saw the article."

Markus has been doing bits with Daniel Divavi on FIFA but says he doesn't have "the time and motivation" to do 2000 games again and so the Gomez experiment will remain a one-time deal.

Gomez has achieved cult hero status amongst football status but just how did he become Markus "childhood idol"?

"I'm obviously a huge fan of him, it was always a pleasure to see him score live in the stadium. Unfortunately I couldn't be at the game where he last scored so I paid tribute that way.

"It's not a particular game but he's a calm person in general I have never seen him as a cocky guy or arrogant guy. I love players like that.

"But if I have to recall an awesome moment it was a game against Hertha his first game after his return to Stuttgart.

He caused the opponent to score an own goal and everyone thought he scored. They played the Gomez song in the stadium and that was pretty fun.

"If we speak about FIFA there is nothing better that winning with your favourite players. He shined in weekend leagues and that's what mattered the most."

Gomez didn't quite manage 2000 games in his real life career but he did score 305 goals in 587 club appearances, with a further 31 for the German national team.
