Wayne Rooney has revealed who he believes was the best out of Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard in the never-ending debate surrounding the trio.

The 35-year-old former Derby County captain played alongside Liverpool icon Gerrard, Chelsea hero Lampard and Manchester United legend Scholes in his glittering career.

Rooney sat down with former United and England teammate Gary Neville for a Sky Sports segment in 2018.

When Neville asked him who was the best player he played with for England, Rooney hilariously responded: "Gary Neville."

However, Rooney then went on to name Gerrard ahead of Scholes or Lampard by highlighting the significant influence that the Liverpool legend would have on England.

The United legend explained: "I'd have to say Gerrard. At times, he got us through games and at the period where we lost a lot of players -- yourself, Rio [Ferdinand], Becks [David Beckham] -- it was me, Stevie and Frank left.

"Stevie pulled us through a lot of games then."

Scholes, Lampard and Gerrard are frequently debated by fans over who was the best midfielder out of the trio.

But Scholes, 46, has since admitted that he is "sick to death of hearing" about the debate surrounding himself, Gerrard and Lampard.

The former England international explained: "Stevie G and Frank, of course.

"I'm sick to death of hearing about this, to be honest. It doesn't really matter. People can have their own opinions.

"Them two were amazing, amazing players. But very different players."

Former Real Madrid and Liverpool striker Michael Owen has also argued that he would put Gerrard ahead of Lampard and Scholes.
