Manchester United have made a formal offer to super-agent Jorge Mendes in their bid to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo, according to stunning reports.

Ronaldo, 35, is reportedly on the chopping block at Juventus next summer as the defending Italian champions aim to reduce their wage bill.

And the Portuguese superstar, whose contract expires in 2022, has been heavily linked with reigning French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

However, United have once again been linked with Ronaldo and are reportedly keeping tabs on the Juventus forward's future.

According to Portuguese newspaper Record (via Sport Witness), United have made an approach to the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's agent.

And the report claims that Ronaldo is 'mulling' over a sensational return to Old Trafford, though he remains focused on seeing out the campaign with Juventus.

Ronaldo's potential return to United has led to his 2014 comments about the Red Devils to resurface online.

The former Real Madrid superstar said at the time: "I love Manchester. Everyone knows that. Manchester is in my heart.

"The supporters are amazing and I wish I can come back one day."

Andy Townsend, on the other hand, has insisted that Ronaldo would thrive under Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola should he leave Juventus.

Meanwhile, Watford striker Troy Deeney believes that the Portugal captain should snub United and move to Wolves for its "Portugal connection."

The 32-year-old told talkSPORT: "I would more look at a club like Wolves with the Portugal connection -- that would work.

"Whoever is getting him is still getting an unbelievable talent. You're not going to get the same Ronaldo you had at Man United. That's always going to be the comparison.

"You look at Gareth Bale now, for example, he's gone back to Tottenham and you're already comparing him to the one that left.

"You're still going to get goals from Ronaldo, but he's got to get a season of 30-plus goals [like he did at United previously] -- that's always going to be at the forefront of everybody's mind [...] can he reach that level again?"
