Manchester United will be renamed in Football Manager games forward as a result of a settlement that was announced on Friday.

In May 2020, it emerged United were suing Sega and Sports Interactive over the use of their name in their popular management simulation series.

The official crest and kit was not used but the club felt the FM makers infringed its trademark by "replacing the club crest with a simplified red and white striped logo".

The argument from United was that, "consumers expect to see the club crest next to the name Manchester United... and this failure to do so amounts to wrongful use".

Now, over a year on, the legal dispute has been "amicably resolved" as Football Manager confirmed on social media today.

The key outcome is that the 13-time Premier League winners will now be known as 'Manchester UFC' or 'Man U' starting from FM22.

Players can still manage United and the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Marcus Rashford but they will adopt the different name.

A similar situation happened with Serie A giants Juventus, who are known as 'Zebre' in the game after signing an exclusive deal with Konami.

Juve are also referred to as 'Piemonte Calcio' on EA Sports' FIFA for the same reason, while AS Roma, Lazio and Atalanta also have different names due to signing licensing contracts elsewhere.

For a number of years, players and officials at United have received copies of FM and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has gone on record to say the game helped him become a coach.
