It was a day to forget for the German defender.

In the final minutes of tonight's game, Mats Hummels was presented with the perfect opportunity to give Germany an advantage in their final group game against South Korea.

Unfortunately for him, and millions of German fans around the world, it just wasn't to be.

Hummels had a free header from six yards out but the ball ended up striking his shoulder and the chance was gone.

It was a cruel end for Joachim Low's side. Two goals in injury time from South Korea pair Kim Young-Gwon and Son Heung-Min meant that they finished rock bottom in Group F.

Before this tournament, a Germany side had never been knocked out at the group stage since 1938, so it must have come as a shock to many.

After the full-time whiste, Hummels was one of the first German players to write on social media.

We simply cannot imagine how it would feel to go out in such a brutal manor, but the Bayern Munich centre-back has done the right thing in apologising to those who follow the national team.

It wasn't exactly an essay, but Hummels said 'sorry' to his two millions followers.

Thoughts on Germany's World Cup campaign? What went wrong exactly for Joachim Low?

Would Leroy Sane have made a difference if he was included in the team? There's so many questions that spring to mind now the world champions have been eliminated.
