Subway franchises are reportedly in talks over the possibility of axing Megan Rapinoe from TV adverts after the US star's controversy at Tokyo 2020 this summer.

The United States women's team finished the 2020 Summer Olympics with a bronze medal after a 4-3 win over Australia.

However, Rapinoe was met with heated backlash from Americans after she decided to take the knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

The 36-year-old Reign captain has been an outspoken champion on issues such as equal pay and transgender rights in sports.

Rapinoe's actions were ruthlessly slammed by the likes of former US President Donald Trump, who called out the US women for their "woke politics" at the Olympics.

Now, the US winger is getting 'cancelled' by furious Americans amid her role as a spokeswoman for Subway.

According to Yahoo! Sports, the possibility of dropping an advert featuring Rapinoe was discussed at an event hosted by the North American Association of Subway Franchisees.

The advert in question featured the US international kicking a ball at a person who is holding a burrito.

According to reports, the advert could be pulled amid complaints that Subway has received over Rapinoe.

A Wisconsin store operator revealed that one person had taped a note to the door of his restaurant and called for the "boycott" of Subway due to "anti-American" Rapinoe.

The note reads: "Boycott Subway until Subway fires the anti-American ... Megan Rapinoe, the creep who kneels for our beloved National Anthem!"

The franchisee added: "The ad should be pulled and done with. It gets tiring apologising."

According to the New York Post, Subway doesn't own any of its nearly 22,000 stores.

However, the publication added that the American fast-food chain charges franchisees 4.5 per cent of their revenue, which is used for funding national advertising campaigns and 'controls how the money is spent.'

Donald Trump Jr followed in his father's footsteps and fired a brutal dig at Rapinoe over her 'woke' protests at the Olympics.

Former US President Trump launched another scathing attack on the 2019 Women's Ballon d'Or winner by claiming she "spends too much time thinking about radical left politics."

Rapinoe has since hit back at the 75-year-old American by insisting that it was a "real sad dig."
