Former United States President Donald Trump reignited his rivalry with LeBron James by using the Los Angeles Lakers superstar during his astonishing rant on transgender athletes.

The 75-year-old American's controversial time in the White House came to an end in January after his defeat to US President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

Despite Trump vehemently denying the outcome of the election -- falsely claiming electoral fraud -- it has been speculated that he could run for office again in 2024.

The ex-US president made a public appearance at a rally at the Arizona Federal Theatre in Phoenix last Saturday.

Trump used his platform to launch a scathing attack on transgender athletes, saying that he would only pick them if he was the coach of a women's sports team.

Speaking at the 'Rally to Protect Our Elections,' he said: "If I were a coach, I wouldn't be talking to too many women as we know women.

"I'd be getting some of these people that [...] they're 'women.'"

Trump then went on to single out James by saying that someone questioned what would happen if he transitioned.

"Somebody said that if LeBron James ever decided to get the operation, how would he be on the court? How would he be?" he continued.

Trump continued to taunt James in front of the crowd after mocking him over how the basketball ratings "went up after his team was defeated."

The former Celebrity Apprentice host added: "LeBron James, you can have him.

"Did you see the basketball ratings that were terrible? They went up after his team was defeated."

James, 36, identifies as a man and has never publicly spoken on the record about a desire to transition.

Trump previously accused the four-time NBA champion of racism after he targeted a police officer in a controversial now-deleted tweet.

Biden's predecessor also used his platform in Phoenix to ruthlessly call out the US women's football team and slammed their "woke politics" at Tokyo 2020.
