In a 'Sliding Doors' styled alternate universe there's a Robert Lewandowski who moved to the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers and played for Sam Allardyce, what a world that is. The Pole has recalled a good meeting with the then Rovers boss.

It's almost unimaginable to think of Lewandowski playing outside of Germany. The Polish striker has made a name for himself first at Borussia Dortmund and then at Bayern Munich.

In his time outside of his homeland Lewa has become one of the most dangerous goalscorers not just in the continent but in the footballing world.

And despite being linked to Real Madrid in previous years it doesn't look like he'll be leaving the Bundesliga any time soon.

However he was nearly not there as he was initially not moving to Dortmund but Blackburn back in 2010 and talking today the striker revealed his thoughts on Sam Allardyce:

"I met Sam Allardyce. It was in Poland after one game. I thought he was a good guy, a very good coach.

"He was prepared to take a young player who was something new and might be something special. He was a big person but wanted to come [to Poland to see me]."

However infamously the deal was called off, not because of Allardyce or because Rovers weren't a big enough club but because of an Icelandic volcano erupting.

The cloud from the eruption caused havoc with European air travel and Lewandowski never made it to the north west of England, eventually signing for Dortmund instead.

Check out our team of transfers that never were:

"The flight was booked but we couldn't leave. It changed my life? Yeah! Maybe! If I'd gone there, maybe I would have stayed! I wanted to know if I went "What would I get? What would I learn?"

"It wasn't just a five-minute thought. But then I found out about Dortmund. That was the next step."

What could have happened if he'd moved to Ewood Park?

A look back at the reaction to Sam Allardyce's England sacking

It's been quite the year for Sam Allardyce. This time last year he was on his way to yet another survival from relegation, this time for Sunderland.

It was as an impressive a save as Allardyce has become famous for.

By the end of the summer he was England manager after the national team's terrible performance in Euro 2016 saw Roy Hodgson jump just as the FA were readying themselves to shove the former manager off the cliff.

But just one game in Allardyce's dream job became a nightmare as a Telegraph sting saw him get sacked in embarrassing circumstances.

Here's a look back at some of the Twitter reactions of the fans:

Did Allardyce deserve to be sacked?
