Gerrard's Liverpool career ended on a very sour note...

On this day five years ago, Steven Gerrard's Liverpool career ended in a humiliating 6-1 hiding at the hands of Stoke City.

Gerrard had already experienced defeat in his final home game against Crystal Palace when Alan Pardew's side turned over the Reds at Anfield, but his final game in Liverpool colours was to end in even more embarrassing fashion.

What was supposed to be a pleasant send-off for a Premier League legend on his way to LA Galaxy turned into a complete and utter nightmare.

Stoke absolutely battered Brendan Rodgers' side and were 5-0 up at half-time through goals from Mame Biram Diouf (2), Jon Walters, Charlie Adam, and Steven N'Zonzi.

Captain Ryan Shawcross views it as one of his career highlights and has gone on record to say the whole team were in complete disbelief at what happened in the opening 45 minutes.

As per Four Four Two, Shawcross said: "We were 5-0 up against Liverpool at half time and when we went back to the dressing room nobody said a word, we just burst out laughing. The manager walked in and didn't know what to say."

Gerrard was able to finish with a 186th goal for Liverpool in the second half on his swansong, though to this day many still believe that Stoke let him run in and score in front of the away end.

It was nothing more than a consolation on a truly miserable day, however, as former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch made it 6-1 with a late header.

Incredibly, Gerrard's very last act in a Liverpool shirt after all those special performances and game-winning moments - was getting done by Marc Wilson.

Throw in that Gerrard was also sent off 38 seconds after coming on in his final appearance against Manchester United a few months prior and it really was a banterous finale to an incredible Premier League career.
