The England man was given the armband last year, but it seems the player's teammates weren't all on board.

One Manchester United star recently questioned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's decision to appoint Harry Maguire as club captain, a new report alleges.

The defender was given the honour of the captainly at the beginning of last year, after becoming an ever-present in the backline for the club.

However, according to a new report by The Times, this was called into question in the aftermath of United's dreadful 4-2 defeat to Leicester City earlier this month.

It claims that players were invited to give their feedback on matters in the wake of the King Power result, in a clear-the-air meeting.

Among other bombshells, it is said that one star United player outright questioned Solskjaer's decision to hand the captain's armband to Maguire ahead of some of his other teammates.

Certain individuals "did not hold back", The Times declared, with another player pointing to a lack of desire and effort in training from some members.

In addition to this, the 48-year-old coach was claimed to have been put on the spot about his selection policy, asked to explain why some players were still being picked despite not performing well.

Overall, it concludes that the playing squad still respects Solskjaer, but that there is also increasing scepticism over his tactical acumen - especially when compared to some of his Premier League peers.

As this season has already highlighted, the likes of Thomas Tuchel, Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have already negotiated tricky games and helped their respective sides overcome adversity - while United have floundered in recent weeks.

In spite of the mounting pressure on his shoulders, the Norwegian is expected to be kept on by the United board, even as other managers like Antonio Conte continue to be linked.

The Italian is fresh from guiding Inter Milan to a first Scudetto in over a decade, having previously won the Premier League with Chelsea before that.

And yet, due to the destructive nature of Jose Mourinho's tenure at Old Trafford, some at the club have reservations over hiring another superstar manager with a cult-like appeal.
