Carli Lloyd has been named the highest-paid female footballer in the world ahead of US teammates Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe.

The 39-year-old former US captain has enjoyed a prolific playing career on the international stage with her country.

Gold medals at both the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games are featured on Lloyd's impressive resume, along with two Women's World Cups and three SheBelieves Cup wins.

Casino.Org looked into the 'unfair discrepancies' between men's and women's football, specifically in terms of salaries.

They found that Lloyd came out on top of the pile with a $518,000 salary at National Women's Soccer League side NJ/NY Gotham.

However, the two-time World Cup winner's salary was dwarfed when compared with Barcelona captain Lionel Messi.

"The highest-paid male footballer in the world is Lionel Messi, who earns $92million a year at Barcelona, which is 178x more than Lloyd earns," Aaron Shields wrote.

Sam Kerr secured second place ahead of Morgan and Rapinoe, with the Australia legend pocketing $500,000 per year at Chelsea.

Morgan ranked third on the list with her $450,000 salary, while Rapinoe secured fourth place thanks to her $447,000 salary.

Both Morgan and Rapinoe have been outspoken critics on the issue of equal pay in women's football.

Shields found that Morgan's $450,000 salary at Orlando Pride fell a staggering way short of rivalling the third highest-paid male footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo pocketed a whopping $70m a year at Juventus, which was 156 times more than what the Orlando Pride striker earned.
