The 10 Best Centre-Backs In World Football In 2020 Have Been Named And Ranked

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk has been named the best centre-back in world football ahead of Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly and Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos.

The Reds splashed out a whopping £75m to land the 29-year-old Dutch defender from Southampton in 2018.

The Netherlands captain has lifted both the Champions League trophy and Premier League title with Liverpool.

That's not to mention that Van Dijk was named PFA Players' Player of the Year in the 2018-19 season and finished second behind Lionel Messi for the 2019 Ballon d'Or.

While Van Dijk faces a lengthy spell on the sideline due to injury, the Liverpool defender has been named the best centre-back in the world.

ESPN compiled the rankings and placed the former Southampton and Celtic man top of the pile, saying there are 'hardly enough superlatives to describe Van Dijk's consistently imperious performances.'

The publication added: "It is virtually impossible to get the better of him, and when somebody threatens to -- witness a relatively harmless run from Arsenal's Nicolas Pepe earlier this season -- it is quickly circulated online as an item of astonishing rarity."

Napoli's highly rated Koulibaly, who has been linked with Liverpool and Manchester United in recent seasons, finished behind Van Dijk in the rankings.

Ramos, who is often considered one of the best centre-backs in world football, surprisingly finished fifth in the top 10.
