Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a move for Bayern Munich's David Alaba in January amid the club's defensive crisis.

Alaba, 28, is out of contract at the end of the season and has yet to agree a new deal with Bayern.

He's attracting interest from Juventus who are hoping to secure his services on a free transfer in the summer.

But the Italian giants face stiff competition from Liverpool who are also keeping tabs on the versatile star.

The Premier League champions have expressed an interest in signing Alaba and could strike a pre-contract agreement in January ahead of a potential free transfer in the summer, per Football Insider.

Though the Reds could swoop in for him in the winter transfer window for a cut price - similar to the signing of Thiago Alcantara who joined the Anfield club for just £20 million.

A reported fee of £30 million for Alaba in January could prize him away from Germany.

The player currently earns around £150,000-a-week at Bayern and has been offered a £200,000-a-week contract, according to BILD.

But the report claims he feels undervalued given his service to the club.

Alaba has been with the Bundesliga champions since 2008 after graduating from the youth academy.

He's enjoyed a trophy laden 12-year spell, winning nine league titles, six German Cups and two Champions League titles.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will be without Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season after the Dutchman suffered a serious knee injury against Everton.

And Fabinho, whose deputised at the back, also faces a spell on the sideline after picking up a knock against Midtjylland on Tuesday.

Speaking after his side's 2-0 victory in the Champions League, Jurgen Klopp said: "Losing Fabinho is exactly the last thing we needed.

"Fabinho felt his hamstring - he said he could have played on but couldn't make any more sprints. He has to have a scan."
