There were serious limbs on Porto's plane after last-gasp Atletico Madrid penalty miss sees them reach Champions League round of 16

There were serious limbs on Porto's plane after last-gasp Atletico Madrid penalty miss sees them reach Champions League round of 16

Atletico Madrid missed a penalty awarded AFTER full-time, which meant Porto qualified for the round of 16.

Porto players celebrated wildly on the plane after a last-gasp Atletico Madrid penalty miss secured their qualification into the Champions League round of 16.

The Portuguese outfit ran out 4-0 winners over Club Brugge in the early kick-off in Group B, with Mehdi Taremi bagging a brace and Evanilson and Stephen Eustaquio also on target.

The win against the group leaders took Porto onto nine points going into the final matchday.

However, Sergio Conceicao's side have made it to the knockout stages following some quite remarkable drama in the other game in the group as Atleti hosted Bayer Leverkusen at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The two-time finalists went behind twice to goals from Moussa Diaby and Callum Hudson-Odoi, with Yannick Carrasco and Rodrigo de Paul both finding the net.

Atleti threw the kitchen sink at it but the referee blew the whistle for full-time. Yet, in a dramatic twist, the referee was told to review a handball call that he had initially waved away.

He went to the pitchside monitor and went against his original decision by awarding Atletico a penalty that culminated in the match being restarted.

It was reminiscent to the scenes between Brighton and Manchester United a couple of years back, when Bruno Fernandes scored a winning spot-kick after the whistle.

Carrasco stepped up but saw his effort saved by Lukas Hradecky, then Saul Niguez headed against the bar on the rebound before the ball was deflected out for a corner.

Atletico are four points behind Porto and therefore cannot qualify for the knockout stages. With one game left, they are in third place - one point ahead of Leverkusen - and set to drop into the Europa League.

Next week Atletico travel to face Porto on November 1, with Leverkusen taking on Brugge.
