PSG goalkeeper Sergio Rico is in a 'serious condition' in hospital after suffering a horse riding accident in Seville, his club have stated.

Spanish outlet Relevo reported that Rico's horse was involved in a collision with a runaway horse, and that the accident occurred at around 9am Spanish time on Sunday. The report adds that the goalkeeper was transferred to hospital via helicopter.

A PSG spokesperson told BBC Sport that Rico is in a 'serious condition'.

Rico was named on the bench for PSG's 1-1 draw against Strasbourg on Saturday, which sealed the Ligue 1 title for Les Parisiens.

Relevo say that the squad were given a day off by manager Christophe Galtier, with the Spanish goalkeeper travelling back to his home country.

After reports of the goalkeeper's accident emerged, former club Sevilla tweeted: "Lots of strength and speedy recovery, Sergio Rico."

Rico signed for PSG in the summer of 2019, and has made 13 Ligue 1 appearances for the club. Last season, he was on loan at Mallorca, making 14 appearances as he helped them to avoid relegation from La Liga.

The 29-year-old was previously on the books at Fulham, where he spent a season on loan in 2018/19, and Sevilla.

He made 29 appearances for Fulham, keeping five clean sheets in the Premier League. Three of those were kept consecutively during wins over Everton, Bournemouth and Cardiff, and the goalkeeper received two player of the match awards over the campaign.

Rico was linked to a return to the Premier League in January, with the Daily Mail claiming that Nottingham Forest were interested in signing him following an injury to on-loan shot-stopper Dean Henderson.

Steve Cooper's side went on to sign Rico's PSG team-mate Keylor Navas, with the Costa Rica international making 17 appearances for the club during his loan spell.
