The sporting world pays tribute to The Queen following her death, aged 96

Queen Elizabeth II died at her royal residence in Balmoral.

The sporting world has paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, following her death at the age of 96.

It was announced on Thursday that The Queen had died at her royal residence in Balmoral after 70 years on the throne.

Her family gathered at the residence after concerns regarding her health started to grow.

Queen Elizabeth II was the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee following her accession to the throne on February 6, 1952. 

A number of sporting organisations and personalities released statements following the news.

England captain Harry Kane tweeted: "My thoughts are with the Royal Family at this very difficult time. The Queen was an amazing inspiration and will be remembered for her incredible years of service to this country. Rest in peace, Your Majesty."

Arsenal are currently playing FC Zurich out in Switzerland in the Europa League and prior to the beginning of the second half, both sides held a minute's silence.

Manchester United, who are set to face Real Sociedad in the Europa League later this evening, confirmed their game will be going ahead while sharing their 'sorrow with the entire nation'.

It reads: "Manchester United shares the sorrow of the entire nation following the announcement from Buckingham Palace on the passing of Her Majesty, The Queen.

"The club recognises her immense contribution to public life, including sport, both here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth, and around the world.

"Everyone connected with Manchester United joins the wider football family in sending our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to The Royal Family."

Both teams will wear black armbands and flags inside Old Trafford will fly at half-mast.

Premier League clubs have changed their social media profile and header pictures black in respect.

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury said: "Thoughts & prayers with my Queen tonight, may God be with you."

British boxer Anthony Joshua retweeted The Royal Family's Twitter announcement with a message of: "Rest In Peace."

William Regal, one of the most renowned British professional wrestlers of all time, sent a message of: "Rest well my Queen."

Formula One President and CEO Stefano Domenicali remarked: "Formula 1 mourns the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

"For more than seven decades she dedicated her life to public service with dignity and devotion and inspired so many around the world. Formula 1 sends its deepest condolences to the Royal Family and to the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth."

Following The Queen's death, the throne was passed to her son, Charles.

He will be known as King Charles III.
