Rayo Vallecano try and recreate the famous Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez 'penalty assist' but fail miserably

Rayo Vallecano's Oscar Trejo decided to try something different in their La Liga clash against Girona.

Rayo Vallecano attempted to recreate the famous 'penalty pass' in their La Liga clash against Girona on Saturday, but they messed up. Big time.

So what happened? Well, after going 2-1 up thanks to goals from Isi Palazon and Oscar Trejo, the two goalscorers had something unusual planned when Vallecano were awarded a spot-kick.

Trejo, who looked confident from 12 yards, actually missed his first penalty attempt with a tame effort. But the Argentine forward was handed a lifeline after the referee noticed some encroachment.

The 34-year-old then decided to switch things up by getting teammate Palazon involved. What happened next will go down in the history books... for all the wrong reasons.

As you can see from the footage above, Trejo passed the ball to his teammate with the top of his boot but Palazon completely fluffed his effort, leaving the pair red faced.

And to add insult to injury, Girona managed to grab a point in the game after Viktor Tsyhankov equalised in the 52nd minute.

Down the years, this risky penalty routine has enjoyed mixed success. Back in 2005, Arsenal winger Robert Pires tried to be creative and roll the ball to his teammate Thierry Henry.

But the execution was way off, with Pires completely missing the ball in the clash against Manchester City.

Years later and Henry claimed the penalty should have been retaken because the ball didn't move from the spot.

"That penalty should have been retaken, because the ball never moved from the spot," he told Sky Sports. "It didn’t, and I don’t know what the ref did or what Danny Mills was doing.

"On that one, the only mistake I did was I didn’t do it. I should have passed it to Robert. We did it so many times in training, but in training everything is easy.

"I thought the big man Robert wouldn’t have lost his composure. But he did. I don’t know why he tried to roll it. If the goalkeeper went diving maybe I would have dummied it, but maybe I would have passed it back to Robert."

On the other hand, former Barcelona pair Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez pulled off the routine perfectly in their 6-1 route of Celta Vigo. See, this is how it's done, Isi and Oscar.
