Gonzalo Higuain announced his retirement from international football on Friday morning.

The current Chelsea was far from convincing when it came to his international career and he even admitted it.

When announcing his decision, the 31-year-old admitted that it would be "to the delight of many".

"For the joy of many, my time in the national team is done," he said in a lengthy statement.

"My relationship with the national team is normal, watching them from the outside. I want them to go forward in the best way.

"I think it is done for me. I want to enjoy my family and myself. They [fans and the media] called us failures for reaching three finals in a row and not being able to win them, one of those a World Cup final. From my point of view, failure is another thing..."

Higuain played up top for Argentina for around 10 years, and despite tough competition from the likes of Sergio Aguero, he went on to make 75 appearances for Argentina, scoring 31 goals.

When it comes to his legacy, however, Higuain's is likely to be the same as most of the other Argentinians.

When you look at the talent in their squad, boasting names such as Messi, Aguero, Di Maria and Mascherano, you would have thought they would have won at least one competition.

The South Americans did in fact come very close on three occasions. They reached the World Cup final in 2014, and two Copa America finals.

But Argentina lost all three of those games and in the process, Higuain frustrated his entire nation in all three finals.

Although the entire team was to blame for the losses, the former Real Madrid striker received much of the criticism.

During each of those finals, the striker had a clear-cut chance to score, but ended up missing all of them.

Higuain said: "You can stop worrying about whether I am there or not."

It is hard to deny the talent of the forward, having played for some of the best teams in the world throughout his career. But when it came to international football, he seemed to struggle in pressure situations.

Who do you know that would miss these chances?
