Roberto De Zerbi got a lot of love for his brilliant post-match interview after guiding Brighton to Europa League

Roberto De Zerbi gave one of the best post-match interviews of the season after Brighton secured a sixth-placed finish and qualification for next season's Europa League.

The Seagulls needed a point to confirm a historic European adventure and accrued it with a 1-1 draw against champions Manchester City in a wonderfully entertaining contest at the AMEX Stadium.

Phil Foden put the treble-chasers ahead before Julio Incisco levelled with a stunning strike from distance.

It was another special performance from Brighton, who have earned so many plaudits for their style of play under De Zerbi ever since he took over from Graham Potter.

Pep Guardiola, his opposite number, waxed lyrical about Brighton in the build-up to the game and afterwards De Zerbi revealed his admiration for the Catalan and how he inspired him.

"I became a coach because of him," the Italian said speaking to Sky Sports.

"I don't know if it's a good thing or not, but I became a coach for him because I loved his Barcelona and I studied him a lot.

"I don't love to copy anybody, but I took [things from him] when I started to be a coach, and before, also, when I finished as a player. Pep is still No 1."

De Zerbi expressed his delight at the "courage" Brighton showed against arguably the best team in the world and midway through the chat, was joined by chairman Tony Bloom.

Fans got an insight into the relationship between the two and the former Sassuolo man expressed his gratitude to Bloom for the freedom he's given him.

"I have to say thanks because there was two difficult situations inside the dressing room. I decide in my way and Tony [Bloom] never said anything. I love the freedom, for that I have to say thanks.”

With one game to spare against Aston Villa, Brighton have confirmed Europa League football next term. But an extra competition means the club will have to place a huge focus on recruiting new players - a field they have excelled in recently.

“Of course! We are speaking because I think next year will be more difficult,” De Zerbi explained.

“To play four competitions in our way because we would like to compete, we have to analyse the squad.”
