Sam Allardyce Reveals Who He Is Backing For Newcastle Job And Rules Out One Manager To Succeed Steve Bruce

Sam Allardyce believes that there is “not a better place” for former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard than to succeed Steve Bruce at Newcastle.

Newcastle’s new owners are on the hunt for a new head coach after Bruce was sacked last month, with Graeme Jones appointed caretaker manager.

The Magpies have been linked with a string of managers, including Unai Emery, Paulo Fonseca, Steven Gerrard and Lampard.

Emery recently emerged as one of the potential frontrunners for the Newcastle vacancy, but the ex-Arsenal boss claims that he is “100% committed” to Villarreal.

Former Roma head coach Fonseca is believed to be a top target for Newcastle and reportedly Amanda Staveley’s preferred candidate to be appointed the next Magpies manager.

However, ex-Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe has recently emerged as the frontrunner and has reportedly agreed a deal in principle to become the new Newcastle head coach.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has insisted that he is “fully focused” with his side’s Scottish title defence, despite speculation linking him with Newcastle.

Lampard was sacked by Chelsea back in January after 18 months in charge of the Premier League club.

Allardyce has ruled Gerrard out of the running for the Newcastle managerial role, but he added that Lampard should “jump at the chance” to succeed Bruce.

The former England and West Ham manager told talkSPORT: “I don’t think Steven, at this stage, will leave Rangers where they are, top of the league and winning every week, to fight at the bottom of the Premier League.

“The Premier League is a massive and exciting league that everybody wants to manage in across the world, I would presume he would want to get here someday.

“At the moment, the Newcastle job is a massive one, but why leave Rangers who are winning every week to challenge yourself with the trials and tribulations of Newcastle.

“Even though they have got plenty of money to spend, they can’t spend it that quick because of Financial Fair Play [FFP].

“Whereas Frank, if I were him, I’d jump at the chance. He’s rested, gained the experience from Derby for Newcastle, his first season at Chelsea, with very tight restrictions, got them to the Champions League.

“Then when they spent the money and they didn’t gel, he was gone. If the club has got money, there’s not a better place for Frank than to take Newcastle on.

“Maybe that might be the owners’ view and it would be nice to see a British manager taking over any Premier League club.”

The Public Investment Fund (PIF) led a consortium that completed their £300m acquisition of Newcastle from Mike Ashley in October.

The Saudi Arabian-backed takeover is expected to release funds from its war chest and Newcastle's owners have already allocated a transfer kitty for the January window.
