School teacher wins $1.6 million after backing Morocco to make World Cup quarter-finals

A school teacher over in America has become an overnight millionaire after winning an insane-amount-of-money on a betting wager.

One punter has won AU$1.6million (US$1million) after correctly predicting that Morocco would reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

And, if we're being honest, it might just be the best bet of the tournament so far.

According to Action Network, the man in his 20s - who is actually a school teacher from New York - put on a bet of AU$133,000 (US$90,818.19) to see Morocco beat Spain in the Round of 16 and advance to final eight in Qatar.

It's understood the bloke was teaching volleyball to primary school kids while nervously waiting for the results of his wager to come through.

Thankfully, the Moroccans sent Spain packing thanks to a cheeky panenka effort from Achraf Hakimi during the penalty shootout.

“I was checking my phone every once in a while, but I wasn’t watching it,” the man told Action Network.

“I don’t know one player’s name.”

He added: “I’m not going to lie and say I knew what I was doing.

“At the end of the day it was a bet that just got lucky. I’m a regular degenerate dude.”

Morocco, who are the furthest they've ever been in a World Cup, now face off against Portugal for a spot in the semi-finals.
