Soccer AM is set to be axed after nearly 30 years on air

The much-loved show on Sky Sports has entertained millions every Saturday morning.

After almost 30 years on air, the much-loved Sky Sports show Soccer AM is set to be axed at the end of the season, say reports.

Jimmy Bullard and John Fendley, who current host the 90-minute Saturday morning programme, were told with other staff members on Tuesday about the news. They were also informed that they would be made redundant in May.

A spokesperson for Sky said: β€œSoccer AM has played an important role in our coverage of football for the past three decades, and we continually adapt to the evolving needs of our customers.

"We now go into a period of consultation to discuss the proposed changes with our people. We are unable to provide more detail while these consultations are underway.”

With just ten episodes remaining of this season's show, reports suggest Fendley and Bullard have been left "fuming" at the announcement.

A source told The Mirror: "It was a complete bombshell. Morale is at an all-time low, they are raging. It's going to be an interesting watch over the next few weeks."

Soccer AM has been a staple of many people's lives since its debut in 1995. Since then, a host of presenters have fronted the show, including popular duo Tim Lovejoy and Helen Chamberlain.

From the iconic Crossbar Challenge and the Car Park Game to Skill School, Tubes' One Question Only and more, fans have expressed their overall sadness at the news.

One said: "Wow sad news. Soccer AM is a massive part of my Saturday morning ritual," while another commented: "Soccer AM being axed by Sky. Kids today will never know how good it was in the Lovejoy/Chamberlain era."

A third commented: "Gutted that Soccer AM has been canned, but then I can’t think of the last time I watched it. The early days were so good and it was hard for anyone to live up to Helen & Tim."

A fourth said: "People give the current Soccer AM production stick but for easy Saturday morning viewing I actually really enjoy it. This is a shame. For me it still has a place."

A fifth added: "So glad to be have been a part of the era that watched Soccer AM at its peak. Truth is too many people are now in tune with social media instead of Saturday morning TV like we used to. Goodbye to a legendary show."
