Steven Gerrard in the running for Wigan job

Steven Gerrard in the running for Wigan job

Having recently been sacked by Aston Villa, Gerrard could now potentially take on the Wigan job in the Championship.

Steven Gerrard has entered the running to become the new Wigan manager.

His time at Aston Villa came to an end in late October following 11 months in charge and now he's on the hunt for a new role.

Having plied his trade in Scottish football and then the Premier League, perhaps a step down to the Championship could be a perfect move for Gerrard to learn as a manager.

Wigan sacked Leam Richardson after an eight-game winless run, despite the fact he signed a new three-year contract just weeks prior.

They triumphed with a late goal from Curtis Tilt against Blackpool today to win 2-1, in a win that saw move ahead of Blackpool into 22nd place as well as draw level with West Brom, who sit one place above them.

Whilst there are no official reports linking the former Villa boss to the role as of yet, he has been ranked highly in the list of potential candidates by the bookies.

He enters the list at 16/1 with SkyBet, with former Everton caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson currently the favourite at 8/11.

Other names on the list include the former Burnley boss Sean Dyche (9/1) former Wigan winger Shaun Maloney (14/1) and the former Watford manager Rob Edwards (12/1).

Given that Dyche has plied his trade in the Premier League for so long at Burnley, it's likely he will seek another job in the top flight.

Gerrard does stand out as the 'glamorous' choice but it remains to be seen whether he will take a step down in terms of the league he wishes to manage in.

The Latics currently sit 22nd in the Championship following a poor run of form, having only won two in 12 - a run that began in the middle of September.

They had found themselves with 16 points after 10 games in early October, but clearly it hasn't gone to plan since.

Gerrard's best achievements came in Scotland, as he triumphed with Rangers in the 2020-21 season to become Scottish champions; breaking the stronghold that Celtic had on the league.

With back-to-back Round of 16 appearances in the Europa League, Gerrard gave the fans some special nights, and his squad building philosophy helped them reach the Europa League final last season, with Gerrard departing the club in November last year.

Whilst there were some notable wins during his time at Villa, having spent big money, the team struggled with one win in nine in the league which was the final straw.

Perhaps it will be sooner rather than later when we see Gerrard back in the dug-out.
