Chris Brunt turned his performance up a notch for West Bromwich Albion after he set up Dwight Gayle with potentially the assist of the season.

The 34-year-old former Northern Ireland international hoofed the ball into the Preston North End box, with Gayle superbly taking the ball first time and firing it past Declan Rudd.

James Shan's team thrashed Preston 4-1 at the Hawthorns on Saturday. Following the opener, Gayle would complete his brace in the first half and Jay Rodriguez would hand his side a 3-0 lead at half-time.

The 28-year-old striker, who is on loan from Newcastle United, added his name to the scoresheet once again in the second half to complete his hat-trick, while Josh Ginnelly was able to pull one back for Preston in injury time.

After the match, the West Brom caretaker manager touched on the subject of his future at the club and also praised Gayle and Rodriguez for their performances against Preston.

"They [the club] have asked me to look after first-team affairs until further notice and that is where we sit and where I am now," Shan told BBC Sport.

"After two negative results I was delighted with the performance, the four goals scored and most importantly the three points.

"They [Gayle and Rodriguez] are both fighting it out to be our top goalscorer. I thought that to get our two highest scorers on the pitch was really important.

"Knowing the pair of them, the way that are around the training ground and how competitive they are, being level pegging, it can only bode well for the football club in our remaining fixtures."
